Countless horror books and movies have used this set up: a couple is driving on a country road in a storm, the car breaks down, and they have to take refuge in a large, creepy, dark house with people who seem a little off. J.B Priestly was one of the first to write this type of story. His book inspired the James Whale film The Old Dark House.
